Crescent Stables Riding School Manager

Crescent Stables Riding School is headed by EC Instructor, Thea Mackenzie. From Tasmania, and schooled in Classical Dressage, Thea has a B.A. in Equine Studies from the University of Western Sydney. Thea oversees the care of the school horses, and starts children on the right track to riding and the love of the horse. Thea’s detailed and straightforward approach is very popular. Joining Thea are Sarah Griffiths, Anne Lyon, Esmee Junaid, Kira Gillespie, Kassidy Nichols, Kim Monteith, and Natalie Ramirez. These coaches have come up through our own program, and take a keen interest in making sure you and/or your child learn safe horse handling practice and enjoy your the challenges of learning to ride a horse or pony.

Our instructors work under the supervision of the Riding School manager, and have a keen focus on safety and fun.  They employ a variety of techniques to make sure that riding goals are achieved, and that instruction is at the level needed for each individual’s learning needs.

Anne Lyon, EC Instructor

Anne specializes in teaching adult riders the joys (and rigors!) of Dressage. With a keen eye for position, Anne is often engaged to lunge the advanced riders wishing to improve their position and the clarity of their aids.

Sarah Griffiths

Sarah Griffiths is one of our riding instructors in our Riding School, and also teaches Dressage to her own clients here at Crescent.

Sarah began riding at the age of 7 and has been training extensively over the past two years in Dressage.  Under the mentorship of Dr. Thompson and through additional learning and education in a variety of modalities, Sarah has become a skilled and thorough instructor with an extremely keen eye. She possesses a unique ability to achieve quick results to correct fundamental riding problems,  enabling her students to continually make breakthroughs in their riding. Sarah has also taken on the training of sales horses for private clients, and helps to retrain the newly acquired lesson horses.
Outside of the barn, Sarah has also worked for countless animal related companies as a consultant and trainer. She holds a diploma in homeopathic medicine and works part time as a commercial falconer. Sarah’s love for all animals and her passion and dedication to the sport of equestrian make her integral part of Crescent Stables.

Esme Junaid

Esme lives for the love of horses, and is dedicated to teaching proper horsemanship to riders at all levels. She is a certified Equine Canada Competition Coach who has been training horses and riders in BC and Ontario for over 15 years.

Esme competed on the A-Circuit in Equitation, Hunters and Jumpers in the late 80’s and 90’s throughout BC, winning many championships.

Over the last 10 years when Esme wasn’t at the barn, she was working in Property Management (Commercial and Multi-Family Real Estate) winning industry awards for Advertising and Corporate Branding.  She holds a BA from the University of Western Ontario.

Highlights of Esme’s day include watching a 7 year old proudly tack-up on their own, seeing a teen execute a great hunter round, training a young horse to jump, and most of all experiencing the moment when students turn from passengers to riders.

Natalie Ramirez

Natalie began riding at the age of 7 and after 10 years of weekly lessons, and a little break for college, she bought her own horse! In addition to riding her own horse, Natalie found her calling in working with young off the track thoroughbreds.

Natalie first came to Crescent Stables as a working student in 2010, and has since started a family.  Now that her son is 2, Natalie is back riding the young horses and schooling some of the jumpers. Natalie teaches in the Riding School, and is taking new students interested in riding and showing in the Hunter/Jumper disciplines.

The Lesson Horses

Crescent has a wide variety of lesson horses, ranging from the fairly high strung athletes for competition purposes, right down to the oldest horse in the barn, Angie the lesson pony!

New riders start out on quiet, well behaved horses such as Angie, or the also popular Moriah, Squirty, or another super-trooper in the barn. More experienced riders might also ride these horses, but they also might branch out into some of our former competition horses that are Thoroughbreds or Warmbloods.  Advanced riders such as Rachel and Caitlin and Deanna ride the younger horses and are often preparing to compete some of the lesson horses or the competition horses we have available for lease.

Leasing

Leasing is sort of like part time horse ownership.  Leases can be one, two, or three days a week, or more. Leases allow for practice time riding in the ring, as well as hang out time with “your horse”.
